What is Reel to Reel Tape?

Reel to Reel Tape or Open Reel Tape is the form of magnetic audio tape contained on a reel instead of enclosed within a cassette.  The most common consumer use tape is 1/4", although, tape also came in 1/2", 1" and 2"  but was used mostly for the professional recording industry.

To determine what you have, measure the width of the tape.  It should
measure a quarter inch in width.

Keep in mind various factors will determine your actual transfer charge.  Here's  a few ...

1.  Variation of recording speeds.
2.  Various recording levels:
Material was recorded by a variety of machines at different times.
3.  2 Tracks play at the same time:   Material bleed or cross-talk is caused by aged, poorly stored magnetic tape.
4.  Poor quality of tape material:   Brittle or shredding tape, magnetic tape separating from cobalt backing or chemical contamination.  Aged magnetic recording material may become unplayable due to the binder or the chemical added to the binder used to adhere  the magnetic material to the backing becomes unstable.
