Regular (Standard) 8mm Film

PictureVarious Film Reels
Standard 8mm was first introduced in 1932 by Eastman Kodak.  It is 8mm in width, and generally does not have any form of sound.  Standard 8mm film has larger holes down the side of the film compared to Super 8mm film.  Unfortunately film was not made to last forever. In fact, time has not been a friend to 8mm film.  See below for more information regarding the condition of your film.

Let us digitize your film so you can enjoy without having to set up your old projector.   Now that's convenience!

Storage of your 8mm film reels
It's best to store your film in a location with steady temperatures and low humidity.   Do not store film in attics, basements or direct sunlight.   Avoid any locations near paint or chemicals.  A cool, dry, temperature controlled environment will prolong the integrity of your precious family films.

Deterioration
Film stored in prolonged dampness or humid conditions will stick together and mold may grow, ruining the emulsion.  (See photo)  The process of deterioration has several stages, each resulting in further decay of the film.
  1. The first sign which is easy to detect, is the vinegar like smell. Why does it smell like vinegar?  Acetic acid is released during the initial acetate base deterioration, leading to the characteristic vinegar odor. The smell
in itself is not enough to end the life of your film, however, subsequent stages will.
  2. In the next stage, the plastic film base becomes brittle, weakening the film causing it to shatter and buckle.  Once this happens, the film cannot be copied in it's entirety.  Warning: If your film shows signs such as
this, it is recommended that you bring your film to an expert for recovery.
